Reasons to be Cheerful... ..Part 2

Yes, isn't it great when there's no one at home.
This from my latest collection called Herbi L'vs Debbie.
I'll look forward to seeing what you other bloggers like to do on a quiet Thursday afternoon. Please forward all your artwork via the comments link, thanx.

Reasons to be Cheerful... ..Part 1

Fresh Grapefruit, straight off the tree. I recommend a dosage of A carrier bag full per week if you can get your grubby mits on them if not (and I dont condone theft at all but) you should plan a raid on the local fruit market, I advise that you work in teams like Dolphins rounding up Tuna. (thanx Tania) Serving suggestion, cut into quarters and munch the ruddy lot of it pith and all.

Thanx to every one concerned, I will be looking to plant my own tree when i escape from paradise Hell hole. Cheerful that's me.

On my Radio

Excuse my French here but fuck my old boots backwards there's definitely strange happening's in the air, in the water and in my bones.
It's got to be my new mantra 'ask and thou' shall receive' I've put it out there that I need to spend more time at home to get me and the family organised and to concentrate on all the things that need tending to, namely me, my kids and my wife closely followed by a career that makes us all happy which obviously includes the things that are close to my heart.
So you can imagine the weird shift in the air when yesterday I received two e-mails one from the station where I do a Thursday evening show saying that i could do another stint whenever they can fit it in! And then 5mins later from 95BFM which is the best Station in NZ (that I've found) it's college radio with a very interesting selection of tunes, shows, djs and whats more, rows and rows of good old fashioned bend covers VINYL. Now call me cheap if you like but dribble dribble can you lift that tongue up sir so i can run the hoover through...
So I get the PRIME slot (no joke Chris) between the Sat' night ravers and the Sunday morning Kids show so no difference there then just have to put a Prodigy album on and put my feet up! Well that was my initial thought, but now I'm gonna have to get my finger out my sorry arse, shake off the out of line vertebrae and get the vinyl out (at last) learn how to use the gear and bish bosh - come on, let me see you shake your tail feather, ohhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhh.
This week i have been mostly setting up a new company www.tipiandyurthirenz.blogspot.com a snappy title I know (not) but it does exactly what it says on the tin.
Got to sleep now, saw backs take it out of you, you know. Oh and did i say I packed in work!
Speak soon.

Amy, Amy, Amy. Where's my Moral Parrallell

AMY & CINDY
Separated at birth....... beehives, mascara, and voices. Its all you need for a party.
You can say what you like about Amy Winehouse but for my money anyone who sports a beehive has got a clutch of sailors tat's and sings like the bastard daughter of Sly Stone and Sarah Vaughan is okay in my book.
Just because she wrote a fuckin' good album that seemed to appeal to about three quarters of the world population all at the same time and therefore became the Star that everyone loves to hate, because "the dirty little whore" is constantly in the gutter or the clouds. Why cant they just understand a little bit more of life, stand up and say look if we hound the shit out of this woman she may never produce any kind of quality work again, she may end up along with the likes of Kurt Cobain on the end of double barrel train to Skaville.
I don't know, because i rarely read a news paper or listen to the news these days (its too depressing) AND being as well placed as i am on this small Pacific Island Archipelago, (its got to be bad if i know about it!) This press thing of build em up and knock em down drives me insane, okay so i have my own personal agenda hear I need to hear what that voice is going to be able to do with the best recording equipment available and I'm also intrigued to find out what will happen if she ever gets to that bloated Jim Morrison/Elvis phase? Lets face it a bigger frame must mean a deeper voice and a healthier life style, not to mention a sequined jump-suit or beard.
Anywho, the point is that I've been revisiting some of her earlier works this week and you know what, its awesome. Get yourself a decent Ska/Hi-Hop, Jazz band and put some proper everyday social commentary and lay over the top the most exquisite Vaughan/Holiday vocals and this boys in heaven and as its about time I made a return visit, so leave the poor cow alone.

Ive been really pissy today, dont hold your breath!

Grumpy bastard who didnt get up on time and had to run straight out the door, felt pretty shitty no wife, no energy, no scruples, no brain at some points. I luve you, im sorry, please forgive me, thank you. It's been in my head all day along with a million other things, work, work and more work. Okay thats enough, move on.........

Im a sucker for feeling better when i get things done and yet sometimes the things you have to do dont feel like the things you want or need! to, weird shit. I realise i felt like a fukin hobo again and as ive been slipping in to old habbits, the old lines of thought and action open up, yep its that savage circle stuff that pisses me off. Its good that Gertie is gettin stuck in and actually doin stuff to move us on, cos it some times feels like I dont have the heart for it, and thats not the case but i know thats how it feels and looks probably. Theres a definate need to step up and i'm all in dreads an all. But fuck ive felt it this weekend, sore skin and teeth, back and head, ...there it goes again.

Trying to be possitive constantly, especially recently as felt a bit too much! I think particularly when people die its a real time for contemplation and if you give yourself a chance to feel it your heart will tell you just fuckin get on with it what ever you want to do, dont waste any time doin anything you dont want to, including the stuff you believe that has to be done. Shit, thank the lord for ten mins of free thought and some Dub Reggae at the moment its LOve Grocer - Sunset point, its got that pheramone that makes you feel good or stoned or both but it gives you time to shut out the mind chatter and concentrate on what comes naturally, from the unconcious, which for me means that i'm getting on with what i want to and not the million things that conditioning tells us we have to do.

Was there a point to this scrawl? I dont know, I think there was when it started out but I lost track somewhere along the few minutes it took to write, so hell we'll move on and maybe i'll come back to it later, but dont hold your breath!

Old Man Very Happy

I'm not sure why i left it this long, may have had something to do with an extremely dodgy Internet connection, but any way i eventually saw the video footage of Rollins fronting the Ruts at last years charity gig in London.

You may agree with me when i say that The Ruts were won of the best bands to come outta the late seventies punk thing, you may not. But when I heard that our Henry was goin to be fronting it was like "Take me back to ole Virginy" absolutely awesome. Now i knew Paul Fox was ill but it hadn't all stacked up in my mind.

When I saw the clip of Henry talking about them gettin' it together cos Paul wanted to play the set for one last time, tears poured from me like a watering can, uncontrollable, emotional bloody wreck.

The other reason I guess I hadn't looked was as I was still pissed off for havin' missed it in the first place, due the little move to NZ we undertook a month before! Unfortunately there was no way round it, so I had to make do with the rough old you tube footage. (Links at the bottom, Kleenex at the ready)

So there goes another of those bands that I always wanted to see, but never did because i was born just a little bit to late. I can vividly remember trying to peel off a huge poster advertising one of their gigs at The Stowaway in Newport and trying to drag it home without breaking it, but it never happened just like me never getting to see them, with or without Malcolm Owen.

Anywho, RIP Paul Fox and Malcolm Owen (of course), and thank you for makin' an old man very happy.

Never Surrender, Never Surrender.

Review - Michael Franti & Spearhead "All Rebel Rockers"

Okay, so being what you may call a spearist, I've been waiting for this new LP for a long time so the expectations were fairly high, even considering the fact I think that their albums seem to get worse as they go along. However, you can never write off such talented, inspirational and damn cool dudes as these.
So my thought process is (again) - Michael and co recording in Kingston with the fabulous Sly Dunbar and Robbie Shakespeare, I immediately think WOW, you cant go wrong..... or can you?
The opening track starts well and gives an impression of 70's Roots Radicals, which is always good with me, but when the vocals come in I'm afraid it's back to mediocrity. Maybe i just want more angst to my Franti Lyrics or maybe its just that the smooth rich Baritone voice is the wrong selection for the Roots Rock Stylee. It maybe, even though it sounds good on paper, the two don't mix. Give me a franti fronted funk hip hop band anytime over this watered down reggae/funk/soul style.
Substance, substance, substance, now i know Michael is a man of great consciousness, great belief's and even greater focus, though the fact remains the spearhead sound is no longer doin' it for me, no matter how hard I try.
Got to go know and try and like this Lp if it kills me, Roll on the NZ tour, it may be that I need to renew my faith in Spearhead.

Another Radio Show!

Wild things are afoot in Auckland, not only did i get asked to do my own music show as previously blogged. Today I had a conversation with someone who I had emailed with a proposal for a radio show, as it goes they like it and want to meet me to get the ideas rolling, I guess that's trade talk for finding out if the idiot on the other end of the line is really capable of producing this show or to find out if he's a fuckwit.
At this moment, i guess that i would fall into the later category, so now i have to get my finger out my arse and get on with developing my ideas into some kind of solid structure or at least write down a few ideas, so that at least they consider letting me take the idea to the next stage.
WATCH THIS SPACE.

Radio Show Shinnanigans

The first radio show was a complete techn fiasco, straight in at the deep end with no off air training. And so it was with baited breath, dj howy p at the helm trying to operate between 6 channels with 2 dodgy cd machines an ipod and the computer and mike, crazy stuff. Started pretty well with my show opener Link Wray & the raymen - Rumble, then me talking over the intro of Beck Gamma ray from the new lp blah blah, but the relief was so great that i let the beck lp run straight into the next track and then was all over the shop. Managed to get back together for an hour or so when i was playing zonderhoof givin myself time to think when i was having trouble cuing the next tune in Freda Payne's band of gold and started paniking because i couldnt hear anything in the cans, then just as i was trying to fade in a non existant song the bloody phone started ringing well that was enough to send me over the top. On the phone was the dj that follows me on and he couldnt get in! so when i put the next tune on i went to let him in and he was practically in tears saying bloody hell i havent heard freda payne since about 1971 when i used to go dancing in Huddersfield! And then went on to dothe dj thing and go on and tell the listners (all 8 - just joking) about it and didnt stop going on about it, very funny. When i tuned in the following eve on my way home there were these young hip hop dudes still going on about it, but not with the same view, in fact they were saying how bad it was, but hell any reaction got to be good one in my book! And what was quite funny was they then went on to rap over some moss def tune, which was actually on my playlist even though it didnt get to air because of techno difficulties. In theory its all quite easy but when you open a mike and you forget everything and anything you cant even remember how to talk it's going to be a steep learning curve.
Of course to be a chapion of new music I need new music, so to enable me to live within my means ( for the first time ever) please send all new tunage you can get your grubby mits on with as much info as you can and i will share it with THE LISTENERS, yes indeedy pop -pickers. Un till next week. Check Out www.zonderhoof.com

Work and be Happy

How many people I wonder are fortunate enough to make a living doing some thing that they are passionate about?

It strikes me that if everyone was able to do that then surley we would be over run with Rock Stars and Footballers. What about the other jobs, you know the ones that most of us have to hold down to turn the wheels of industry, do you know anyone who is passionate about them? Maybe thats the wrong way to look it, perhaps people are just fortunate to have a job (period) I know there's been times in my life when i've considered myself lucky to have any old shitty job.

So whats with the current tide of people who are actively seeking ways to change career paths. Bloody good news if your one of these new fangle Life Coach's, but interesting, difficult, troubling and exciting times for the rest of the world. I'm not talking about 20year olds who decide to go off around the world 'finding themselves' before settling down to have kids and no doubt get stuck in the same rat (race) trap as the rest of us. Were talking 30 to 50 year age group who have been in the same industry for the best part of their lives or only ten years in some cases who have just had a guts full of getting up at 5.30 every morning and not getting home before dark, you know the ones who have missed their kids growing up and now cant get to grips with the adult behaviour of there offspring who are now doing all the things that you did when you were a so called young adult.

In the current climate of high unemployment, and with the cost of living rising by the minute, is it a good move for anyone to think about changing careers no matter how long in the tooth they may be? I've come to the conclusion that you're never to old to change your ways, your attitude, your lifestyle, your bank, your hair style our your pants in fact nothing should be out of reach for the free spirited, open minded individual who wants more than anything to be happy and anyway a roll over week never hurt anybody!

So if you want to be happy and wake up in the morning looking forward to getting on with your days work then get your finger out of your arse and get on and show those kids of yours that it's possible to do what ever makes you feel good and live off the proceeds. This is surley the best way, to lead by example break the mold and maybe in a few generations we will be part of the Rock God Race.

Happy Hunting.

THE EYE BALLOON

SL Macombee

As if by magic she appeared, haunting, beautiful, dream-scapes, nightmares, daily grind and more this sounds like Nelly McKay on a date with Ian Dury (all hail the Blockheads). No, seriously what a voice! I don't now much but i know what i like and all that..
Stripped down on this occasion to vocal and piano supplied by Paul 'audio man' Issacs. The demo was recorded in house (literally in the lounge) and captures the beautiful natural vocal delivery in its true essence, no fx, no studio work, no double vocal takes just the real thing, live. This i find very refreshing in the current climate.
For fuck sake if you get chance dont miss this outfit live, weather its Sarah performing solo or with any other amount of local and international talent. It's the kind of awe inspiring talent thats worth checking. Check Out www.myspace.com/slmacombee
